If you’ve been knocked off your feet by the flu, you’re not alone. Influenza affects millions of people every year. While the flu shot can help prevent illness, if you do get sick, there are some steps you can take to help recover faster.
Do not hesitate to see your doctor if your symptoms seem to be getting worse instead of better. While unpleasant, the flu usually resolves on its own within a week or two with lots of rest and self-care at home. Follow these tips to take good care of yourself and get back on your feet as quickly as possible.

Stay Home and Rest
The first and most important tip is to simply stay home and rest as much as possible. Your body needs all its energy to fight off the virus, so skip work, school, and other activities until your symptoms improve. Resting will allow your immune system to mount a stronger defense against the flu.
Stay Hydrated
Fever, sweating, vomiting, and diarrhea can all lead to dehydration when you have the flu. Drink plenty of fluids like water, broths, electrolyte drinks, and diluted juices to replace those lost fluids. Avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages which can promote dehydration.
Take Medication as Needed
Over-the-counter medications can provide relief for some flu symptoms:
• Pain relievers like acetaminophen can reduce fever, headache, and body aches
• Decongestants can help clear nasal and sinus congestion
• Cough suppressants can ease severe coughing fits
Follow dosage instructions carefully. Be sure to seek medical advice before taking any medication.
Use a Humidifier
Dry air can further irritate an already sore throat and nasal passages. Run a cool mist humidifier in your room to increase moisture in the air and loosen mucus. Be sure to clean humidifiers regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth.
Get Plenty of Nutrition
When you’re feeling lousy, you may not feel like eating much, but proper nutrition gives your body the fuel it needs to recover faster. Choose easily digestible, nutrient-rich foods like broths, soups, yogurt, fruits, and vegetables as best you can. Avoid heavy, greasy, or sugary foods that can be harder to digest.
When to Seek Medical Help

Most cases of the flu can be managed at home with rest and self-care. However, seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of the following severe symptoms:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Purple or blue discoloration of the lips
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Sudden dizziness or confusion
- Seizures
- Worsening of existing medical conditions
Children, adults over 65, pregnant women, and those with chronic conditions are at higher risk for flu complications, so contact your doctor promptly with any concerns.
