The mind and body are often considered separate. In reality, however, mental health and physical health are interconnected. A study found that positive psychological wellbeing can lower a person’s risk for heart attack and stroke. In contrast, poor mental health can lead to poor physical health or harmful behaviors.
As such, it’s important to develop healthy lifestyle habits that promote mental health and wellbeing:
Get at least 7 hours of sleep every night. Adequate sleep allows your body and mind to rest and helps enhance your mood.
Exercise for at least 30 minutes on most days of the week. Aside from maintaining your physical health, regular exercise generates “feel-good” endorphins that can ease stress and anxiety as well as help prevent depression.
Stay connected with family and friends. Social interaction is an integral part of being human. Forming positive and meaningful relationships can help you cope with the challenges and stresses of daily life, as well as lift your mood and provide purpose to your existence.
Learn to relax. Training your mind to relax is one of the best ways to manage stress and achieve physical and mental wellbeing. Effective relaxation techniques include meditation, progressive relaxation, guided imagery, biofeedback, self-hypnosis, and deep breathing.
Practice gratitude and stay positive. Counting your blessings and being thankful for them is a great way to maintain a positive mindset and uplift your spirits even in the face of adversity. Having a positive outlook on life provides a big boost to your mental health.
