With so many beauty buzz words flying about (not to mention of-the-minute trends!) it’s easy to feel a little lost. So, to help you fully understand the words displayed across our favourite products we’ve put together handy guides that go back to basics – and then some. Today’s masterclass? The ultimate guide to mineral makeup…
What is Mineral Makeup?
A mineral product by definition has a formula made up of very small minerals (duh) such as iron oxides, zinc oxide, talc and titanium oxide. It may sound a little science-y but the massive difference between more traditional products and mineral is that the latter is free from preservatives and irritants.
Why should I use Mineral Makeup?
There are so many reasons! If you have sensitive skin, blemish-prone skin or irritated skin then mineral makeup can work wonders as it is non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores).
If you have combination or oily skin, you’ll be pleased to know that mineral makeup can help absorb excess oil too. Say bye bye to shiny T-zones!
Are Mineral Products always in Powder Form?
Not all mineral makeup products are powders. While they may be more common (especially in foundation form) you can also find liquid mineral products including mascaras, face masks and primers.
Should I Switch to a Mineral Foundation?
For sensitive, oily and blemish-prone skin types you may benefit from using mineral foundation due to the kind-to-skin coverage they promise.
Just like traditional foundations, there’s a mineral foundation for most skin concerns including anti-ageing and colour correcting formulas. When choosing a foundation there’s never a one-size-fits-all approach so feel free to get advice from beauty advisors on your skin type to make the right choice for you.
Does ‘Mineral’ mean the same as ‘All-natural’ and ‘Organic’?
They all may sound like they are interchangeable adjectives, but all three words mean different things.
Certified organic products are strictly regulated and must adhere to legal standards before it can be promoted as ‘organic.’ Whereas ‘natural’ and ‘mineral’ products are unregulated and are defined by slogans on the packaging.
Always look out for the words on the packaging or any recognised stamps of approval to ensure you’re purchasing the right product.
