First, pick the right size and shape of your sponge. When applying foundation on larger areas of your face, use bigger and round shaped sponges for the best result. Whereas smaller, squared off sponges work best for the smaller corners of your face or on targeted areas where you’re concealing blemishes.

Before you begin your makeup application, soak the sponge in water as a moist sponge will help to smooth out the makeup. Pour a small amount of liquid foundation onto the back of your hand, dip the rounded end of your sponge into the makeup, and you’re set to begin applying to your face. Gently dab or blot the makeup on your face until your foundation is completely blended. Do not rub or drag the sponge across your skin. Continue adding foundation until you see a seamless finish.

You can use the same dabbing technique when applying concealer underneath your eyes and cream blush to your cheeks. After you master the dabbing skill, you can even use your sponge for blending contouring products and highlighter.

Besides knowing how to apply foundation with the versatile sponge, it’s also very important to keep your favorite tool clean. There are special cleansers created for makeup sponges on the market, but mild soap or even baby shampoo will do the trick as well. Run your makeup sponge under warm water, add a few drops of soap and rub out the stains until the water runs clear. Roll the cleaned sponge onto a towel to remove any moisture, and then lay it flat on the towel to dry. Don’t forget to replace your sponge every couple of months for hygienic reasons.
