Everyone can be allergic to certain kinds of skincare ingredients, even they are natural. It is important to patch test a new skincare product in advance and ensure you are not allergic before you are using it. Here is the guide to do a patch test.

What is a patch test?

A patch test is a simple way to check whether your skin will react to the new skincare product. It is a common method to check for any possible allergic reactions, comedogenicity, breakouts, and skin irritations before you use a new skincare product.

How to patch test a skincare product?

Please follow the steps below to do a patch test properly.

Step 1: Use a clear patch of skin

You should choose a clear and accessible patch of skin to test the new skincare product. The skin area should be somewhere that you can comfortably leave alone for up to 24 hours.

Step 2: Cleanse the skin area first

Cleanse the skin area before doing the patch test. You can ensure that it is the reaction of the new skincare product you applied and not other else. Make sure the skin is clear for patch testing.

Step 3: Apply a small amount to the skin

Just simply apply a small amount of the skincare product to a small skin area and cover the area with a band-aid. For example, the elbow, the underside of the jaw, jawlines, the corner of the forehead, behind the ears, or the side of the neck.

Step 4: Wait for 24 hours

Then, you should leave it for 24 hours before removing the band-aid. If you experience any allergies like redness, pain, burning, or itching, you should remove the band-aid and cleanse the affected area immediately. If you have a severe skin allergy to the product, you should consult your doctor.
